Fat & Fibre

By Adge747 Parker

Nature’s surprising fat fighter: You knew it was good for you, did you know it could help you to loose weight?

Overcoming the pitfalls of the modern fast food and fat-promoting diets can be as simple as adding a naturally occurring nutrient that is fat-free, cholesterol-free, calorie-free but is almost completely missing in the well advertised but so popular supermarket and junk foods: fibre

It’s not new and exciting—but it IS radical—and it works! We are bombarded with foods that have been so highly processed that they are devoid of fibre. More than 80% of the food we consume is processed. The more a food is refined the less fibre it contains.

It naturally blocks the absorption of fat. Experiments show that when healthy adults are fed equal amounts of fat in the form of whole peanuts, peanut butter, and peanut oil, more fat is absorbed from the peanut oil than from peanut butter and more from peanut butter than from whole peanuts. Why? Fibre blocks the absorption of fat—and so calories—in the intestines.

The greater the consumption of fibre, the higher your calorific waste, fibre causes a true alteration in the digestion and absorption of fat. Part of the fat becomes associated with fibre so that it is not available for digestion and therefore increases fat excretion.
What’s more when you consume enough fibre, both your small and large intestines contain more watery material. When your bowels are full then the messages sent to your brain tell you to stop eating!

What happens when the fibre is removed from the foods you eat? Put very simply you gain weight much more easily. Why?

There’s an enzyme in your fat tissue that has the primary function of protecting you from starvation. As soon as any weight loss takes place, this enzyme sends a message to the brain to tell you to increase your calorie intake. Now, whether you like it or not, this is how our bodies have been programmed and responded for millennia, this response is more suitable to the time when there wasn’t some 4,000 items of food available from the 24-hour supermarket.

When you eat a natural, high-carbohydrate food that’s been stripped of fibre—you’re dumping too much sugar into your bloodstream; this then causes the manufacture of too much insulin.

Too much insulin initiates communication between this enzyme and your brain, because there is no fibre to fill your intestine the message says, “I’m starving” and sets in motion the mechanism that leads to a slower calorie burning and a more stubborn fat storage system.
As you can see from this fibre is very important to the maintenance of a healthy weight.

No doubt you would like to know how you can get enough fibre in your diet, you know that you need 40—60grams. That is quite a lot, when you consider there is only 6 grams in a head of lettuce, two grams in an apple and very little in leafy greens! Difficult, yes but it can be worse, if you dine out often or don’t have the time to buy and prepare fibre rich foods on a regular basis, you will never meet the daily requirement for fibre through your diet.

It is possible however to obtain a high fibre intake without making major adjustments to your diet. Fibre supplements contain naturally occurring plant fibres.. the formulas are derived from plants that are old-fashioned foods but have been treated to new technology. Their advantages are that they can be: -
· Ground into a powder or compressed into a tablet for easier absorption.
· They are slow to digest.
· Different types of fibre have different functions and supplements can contain a wider variety
· Taking a fibre supplement on a regular basis ensures an ongoing weight loss as it helps to make you feel full and it doesn’t add calories!
· Fibre is the only item in the diet that does not have calories, fat or cholesterol.
