Myth Number 3
By Adge747 Parker of Healthy Answers
All Nutritional Supplements are the same. According to the FDA, 150,000 people die every year from prescription medicines. Can you make a guess as to how many die through taking vitamins? In the last ten years only one person—from an overdose of niacin. There is a vast difference between brands of nutritional supplements, they can actually be divided into three major camps: at the easily affordable end is the cheap supermarket brands, usually synthetic, and are based on the governments Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), the second group are the high potency isolates which contain several times the amounts of RDA, these are based on the research which proves that we need much higher doses of vitamins and minerals to protect us from the deadly seven, but are also very often synthetic. Then of course the purest form is the Food Supplement, vitamins and minerals in the required proportions extracted from organically grown foods, these are the ones that anyone who really cares about good health are looking for. According to Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the creator of the jogging craze in the seventies, from his book, The Antioxidant Revolution. “There was a time when I joined most of the other mainstream physicians opposed to taking vitamin supplements in any amounts, much less in relatively large doses. Along with the majority of the medical establishment I believed you could get all the vitamins and minerals through you daily diet. But my research into free radicals and antioxidants has forced me to change my thinking—as well as my personal health habits. Today I take a daily “antioxidant cocktail”, a minimum multivitamin combination of vitamin C and beta-carotene. If we can pause here for a few moments and consider the brands most advertised on the TV and in the press. The label says that it contains a “Complete Antioxidant Group”. What do you think that’s supposed to make you think? That it meets your every need, right! Now, lets compare what’s in that container to the optimum amounts Dr. Cooper feels are necessary: cheap one 60mg Vitamin C, Dr Cooper 1,000mg, almost 17 times more! Vitamin E 30 IU—400IU again 13 times more. Beta Carotene 2,500IU—25,000 IU 10 times more. This is the pattern of all the cheap brands in the supermarkets and pharmacies; yes you thought you could trust them. Liquid Colloidal Minerals: One ingredient in these in this acclaimed source of supplements is calcium. The MINIMUM Recommended Daily Allowance is 80—1200 mg per day. Yet the label states that the daily serving of colloidal minerals contains only 44 mg. Thats 14-27 times LESS than the government recommended amounts needed to protect you from Osteoporosis. That means you would have to consume the entire bottle every day to get enough of your essential calcium. Beta Carotene. In a Harvard study it was found that those who took beta carotene supplements daily had only half as many heart attacks, strokes, by pass surgery and cardiac deaths as the doctors taking placebos. This positive effect took almost two years to show. A fairly recent American government study found that those taking a vitamin C supplement regularly had 37% fewer fatal heart attacks. Dr. Linus Pauling, a two-time recipient of the Nobel Prize, believed that we could add between 12 to 18 years to our lives by taking mega doses of vitamin C, and as living proof of his theory went on too live to the age of 93! Vitamin E can help you live longer Studies have shown that people who have taken 400 IU of vitamin E a day for at least 10 years lowered their risk of heart disease by 90%. It lowered the rate of death from heart by 78% and the rate of death from heart attack by 58%. Other studies have shown that people taking vitamin E are likely to get 56% fewer cataracts. People who took vitamin C showed a 70% reduction. People taking 400 IU of vitamin E and 300 mg of vitamin C were largely free of cataracts. Arthritis has been shown to improve dramatically with large doses of vitamins A, C, and E taken with the mineral Selenium. Selenium’s prime function is to inhibit the oxidation of fats. It is a vital antioxidant, especially when combined with vitamin E. it protects the immune system by preventing the formation of free radicals, which can damage the body. It is useful against the formation of certain types of tumours. Combined with vitamin E it acts synergistically to help maintain a healthy heart and liver. It is needed for pancreatic function and tissue elasticity. When combined with vitamin E and zinc it may provide relief from enlarged prostate gland, it has been found to protect the liver if you have cirrhosis. Deficiencies have been linked to both cancer and heart disease. Also associated with growth impairment, high cholesterol, exhaustion, liver and pancreatic impairments and sterility. Excessively high levels of selenium are indicated by arthritis, garlic breath, irritability, hair loss, brittle nails, metallic taste in your mouth, skin eruptions and yellow pallor to the skin. Sources of selenium are meat and grains; this depends on the soil content of selenium where the food originates. New Zealand and much of American farmland is low in selenium, this results in selenium deficient produce. It can be found in many foods such as brazil nuts, broccoli, brown rice, chicken, dairy, garlic, kelp, liver, molasses, onions, salmon, sea foods, tuna, vegetables, wheat germ and whole grains. If you are a woman, selenium can help protect you against breast cancer. This year more than115,000 women will learn they have breast cancer. According to Dr. Larry Clark of the University of Arizona, 200mcg of selenium daily cuts the rate of: Prostate Cancer by 69% Colo-rectal cancer by 64% Lung Cancer by 34% Chromium Do you get at least 200mcg of chromium from your diet? If not then your levels of insulin will soar and can cause a multitude of problems, including diabetes, weight gain, heart disease and cancer. 30 mg of zinc in an absorbable form taken every day for at least six months will drastically i improve our immune functions, and specifically for men it helps maintain a healthy and normal prostate gland. Studies have shown that 85% of men with enlarged prostates can find relief with an adequate intake of zinc. Zinc deficiency also causes infertility and decreased sex drive. It has been found that people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease have a deficiency of vitamin B12. So take your food supplements every day! Of course there will be some people who choose to ignore this good advice and for them their future could well be spent, along with their savings, on endless visits to doctors and hospitals for a quadruple bypass surgery, a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatments for any one or more of the deadly seven. Many of them just might end their days drooling and babbling in a nursing home, not knowing who they are and being bathed and fed like babies. You can have a different future to look forwards to, if you follow the S.A.F.E. formula you could make it to live a healthy long, strong and pain free life many years beyond the average life span. Many of the world’s great men have been able to surpass the odds and live long healthy productive lives, when life expectancy was a fraction of what it is today. People like Plato, Tolstoy, Jefferson, Newton, Franklin and the developer of oral chemotherapy Dr. Arthur Furst lived to 93, incidentally he didn’t use his ‘cure’ for cancer he prevented it! With the food supplements he helped to develop. Imagine what you can accomplish with one hundred healthy years and perhaps more!!!

Thank you for sharing these interesting facts, Adrian. I hope that I get the 100 years that you speak of!!! I take my vitamins every day. Best wishes. Frederick

Hopefully, your "vitamins" are natural organic food supplements, Frederick, because synthetic vitamins are more harming than taking none!
Thanks for the information. I think these are the often forgotten vitamins. People will remember to take their B & C vitamins and think that they are covered. I personally know the effects of a chromium, calcium and Vitamin D deficiency whilst taking supermarket multivitamins. Is there a difference that the labels will tell us if they are natural or synthetic vitamins?
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
That is one of the problems with supermarket, pharmacy and in many cases health shops, they sell synthetic vitamins! Or at best a high potency isolate. How can you tell the difference? Wow, that's a course in biochemistry, you can get a good idea from the price, if they are cheap usually they are synthetic so don't buy them. Labels will list ingredients and they should have the natural source listed, vitamin C is often quoted as ascorbic acid which is the shell that surrounds the vitamin and isn't vitamin C. You need the enzymes, co-enzymes and co-factors that work with the vitamin to get nutrition where it is needed, in your cells. When a vitamin is from a natural source it contains these, so you don't have to supply them from your bodies reserves. Again minerals need to be chelated otherwise they are detected as alien and rejected. Calcium needs magnesium and vitamin D to help absorption, coral isn't a good source of calcium.
Its too bad that doctors dont discuss these things with patients and help patients get a specific vitamin 'perscription' based on their own individual needs, age and conditions. I think many people dont know most of this stuff and therefore dont bother with vitamins. I also believe that a quadruple bypass surgery, a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatments for any one or more of the deadly seven can be eliminated by changing the diet to a plant based one, reducing consumption of red meats and dairy and also adding in more exercise....and vitamins..the whole food based kind of course.

Doctors are largely in uncharted territory when it comes to preventing disease through nutrition. I understand that they only spend about four hours learning about nutrition during their degree course. You are right not many people know about how nutrition can prevent and heal, those that do generally buy on price, thinking that a vitamin is a vitamin and they are all the same as each other!
Good intel. I take my vitamins every day as I do not eat right anyway.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
It is very important for you to make sure that you are taking vitamins extracted from food, because of a poor diet synthetics are a waste of money, aren't good for you as they actually rob your body of the things that they need to be absorbed.
Great intel filled with lots of wonderful info... thank you! I take Calcium w/ Magnesium and Vitamin D. I wasn't familiar w/ the difference between ascorbic acid and vitamin c... Thanks for the food resources for selenium, too.

Please I was able to help, you will be pleased that you have supplemented with calcium, magnesium and vitamin D as they all help to build strong bones and make a significant contribution to heart health.
at the easily affordable end is the cheap supermarket brands We don't have any cheap supermarkets in our area. The cost of groceries is getting ridiculous.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
You are right we don't either, perhaps I should refer to them as inferior vitamins.
